How to Choose the Perfect Fruit Basket: A Gift Guide for Every Occasion

A fruit basket is one of the few gifts that suits almost anyone, for almost any reason. It's fresh, healthy, easy to share, and it never ends up in a cupboard.

But not every fruit basket is right for every moment. A get-well basket for a hospital room needs a different touch from a Christmas gift for a busy office. In this guide we cover how to choose the right fruit basket for the occasion, what fruit to expect each season in Australia, how to make it extra special, and how delivery works across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

Choosing a fruit basket by occasion

The occasion shapes the size, the extras and the tone of the gift. Here's how to match them.

Get well soon

Fresh fruit is one of the most welcome gifts for someone who's unwell or recovering. It's nourishing, easy to snack on in bed, and doesn't need preparing. Choose a small to medium basket for a hospital room, where space is tight, and add a teddy or a get-well balloon for a smile. Browse our get well gifts, and read our tips on hospital delivery in NSW.

Sympathy

When someone is grieving, cooking is often the last thing on their mind. A generous fruit basket gives the household something fresh and healthy to share with visiting family. Keep it simple and elegant, perhaps with a candle or a peace lily. See our sympathy hampers.

Birthdays

For a birthday, go bigger and brighter. Pair the fruit with chocolates, a bottle of wine or bubbles, and a personalised card. Our birthday hampers have plenty of fruit-based options.

Thank you

A fruit basket is a gracious way to thank a neighbour, teacher, nurse or colleague. A small basket says it nicely without going overboard. Find more ideas in our thank you gifts range.

New baby

New parents rarely have time to shop, let alone eat well. A fruit basket is a practical gift they'll genuinely use in those first busy weeks. Add something for the baby and you've covered everyone. See our baby hampers.

Corporate and office gifts

Fruit is the easy crowd-pleaser for offices: everyone can share it, and it suits all dietary needs. It's ideal for thanking clients, welcoming new staff or celebrating a team win. Larger baskets and office share hampers work best, and we can help with bulk and branded corporate orders.

Christmas

Summer fruit is at its best in December, so an Australian Christmas fruit basket is full of cherries, mangoes, stone fruit and berries. It's a fresh alternative to the usual chocolates and puddings. Take a look at our cherry boxes and Christmas hampers, and order early, as December is our busiest month.

What's in season: fruit baskets through the Australian year

We hand-pack every basket with fruit that's in season, so it tastes better and lasts longer. That means the mix changes through the year. Here's roughly what to expect:

Season

Highlights you might find

Spring (Sep–Nov)

Strawberries, Valencia oranges, pineapples, papaya, the first mangoes and, by late November, early cherries

Summer (Dec–Feb)

Cherries, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots, grapes, berries, lychees and melons

Autumn (Mar–May)

New-season apples and pears, figs, grapes, persimmons, custard apples and passionfruit

Winter (Jun–Aug)

Mandarins, navel oranges, grapefruit, kiwifruit, apples, pears and custard apples

Favourites like apples, bananas and pineapples appear most of the year. Exact contents depend on what's freshest at the markets that week, and we always choose quality over a fixed list.

Making it extra special

A fruit basket is lovely on its own, but a few extras turn it into a gift they'll remember:

Fruit basket FAQs

How long does the fruit in a fruit basket last? Most fruit stays fresh for several days to a week once it arrives. Berries, cherries and stone fruit are best eaten in the first few days, while apples, citrus and pears last longer.

How should the fruit be stored? Keep the basket somewhere cool and out of direct sun. Pop berries, cherries and grapes in the fridge, and leave bananas, mangoes and avocados on the bench to ripen.

Can I ask you to leave out a fruit? Where possible, yes. Add a note at checkout for allergies or dislikes and we'll swap items out.

What size fruit basket should I choose? A small basket suits one or two people or a hospital room. Choose a medium basket for a family, and a large basket or office share hamper for a team.

Can I send a fruit basket to South Australia, WA, Tasmania or the NT? Fresh fruit can only be sent to NSW, ACT, Queensland and Victoria. For other states, choose one of our gift hampers without fresh produce, which we deliver Australia wide.

Can I order fruit baskets in bulk for clients or staff? Yes. We handle corporate orders of all sizes, including custom branding. See our corporate hampers or call us on 1300 691 296.
